Spain has a vibrancy and beauty that few countries can match, it is therefore not surprising that more and more people are looking to swap grey winters for Spain's blue skies and sunshine.

Situated in the south west corner of Europe, Spain covers the largest part of the Iberian Peninsula and has land borders with Portugal, France, Andorra and Gibraltar, as well as both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. Spain also has two archipelagos; the Canary Islands in the Atlantic and the Balearics in the Mediterranean, as well as two small regions in North Africa.

Spain's largest city is its capital Madrid, although Barcelona closely challenges the capital city in areas such as commerce, sports and the arts. Madrid is itself the highest capital city in Europe and Spain is the most mountainous European country after Switzerland and Austria.

The climate and landscape of Spain is wonderfully diverse, ranging from the snow capped mountains of the Pyrenees, through to the golden beaches of the Costa del Sol, and the desert of Almeria.

The country has a rich and colourful history. It was a very desirable prize for many foreign armies including the Romans and the Phoenicians. The Moors then arrived from North Africa in the 8th century and ruled much of Spain until Christian forces reconquered the country in the 15th century.

Despite the best efforts of many Spanish rulers to introduce a common culture, the country still remains as culturally diverse as ever. Many people, in particular Catalans and Basques, do not even consider themselves to be Spanish.

Whether it is a holiday hideaway, permanent home or investment property Spain remains the most popular destination for an overseas property. Buyers can choose from villas, townhouses, apartments, developed country plots and farmhouses, as well as new build developments.
